I love my trainers and thought illustrating a few of them would provide a good way to look at different illustration techniques. So far I’ve drawn my Converse One Stars and my Adidas ZX700s (I love my ZXs and their colour is pretty awesome).
In the Converse illustration I used line drawing but added this over the colour with a grunge/paint effect for that rough edgy look. For the Adidas I went for a more screen print 4 colour effect. Let me know what you think.
This will be an ongoing project as I have plenty of trainers to work with :D
Here’s my first go at Mike Mignola’s ‘HellBoy’. Didn’t spend to long on it and there’s a few flaws that i’m not happy about but thought I’d show it anyway.
Would like to get the ‘Oversized’ feel to the character with the huge upper body and small limbs. Also try a different style - maybe simpler in appearance.
Expect to see more of the big man on here in the future!
Here’s the Richard Ayoade illustration I’ve been working on. Not sure if i’ve finished with it yet. Might strip it right back again and try take it in a different direction.
I’ve used a motherboard image for the tie (halftone) that also lends itself to parts of the hair.
I wanted to keep it simple and not too complicated and I quite like the rough white edges around the shirt - painting over the lines.
Let me know what you think.
Why not visit my portfolio and see other stuff I’ve worked on.
Here’s a work in progress portrait of IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade - Funny guy and good director as is turns out!
Don’t know if to colour it in fully or keep it minimal i.e. lines with main colour on hair, tie trousers etc etc. Quite liking the hair with a bit of texture.

Here is the second of my illustrated attempts using my new Wacom. It’s a bit of a learning curve but fun. The best bit is how Photoshop really does come into it’s own with all the little extra features for tablets.
If anyone has any good tips let me know :)
Feedback good and bad welcome.
